TITI ultra 2017 - 50KM

I’ve been rest a while from race after PBIM 2016. Thus, I have a bit tension before the race. Another thing is, I have not much training, usually just 10k on weekend. But I have confidence to complete within cut off time :)

Race mandatory & optional items

This is what I prepared for the race.

Nutrilite all plant protein before race

I dinner at 7pm, about 6 hours before the race. I ate maggi goreng chicken chop, quite a large portion. Until 10pm, I drink 2 scoops of All plant protein, Double X 1 set, Salmon Omega 3 one, get myself prepared.

I arrived race site at 11pm, went there early as I not very sure about the location, also not sure how long the mandatory items check it takes.

Lot’s of people over there already. Just the time I reached there, one of the 250KM runner just left the check point (the runner completed 200KM, left 50KM to go). A little while, the champion of 200KM runner arrived, he is really awesome, completed in 29hr++.


Before the race we have a briefing, I heard the director said that some participants don’t bring torch light/headlamp, which not fulfill the mandatory items requirement. This is not a usual marathon, thus it has specific requirements.

Starting race

50KM category started at 1am, and the cut off is 10am.

Starting of the race, it’s raining, then I put my headlamp under my cap (because I read the review that black diamond headlamp is not waterproof).

From start until CP1 (9KM), my average pace is around 6-7 min/km, I just take 2 pieces of watermelon & 2 small cups of soft-drink.

Then continue to CP2 (in KM 14.5), using about the same pace like CP1, which I felt quite a short distance :)

Actually I didn’t know there is a cut off time for every CP, because in King of Sungai Lembing, there is only 1 cut off in one of the CP. But still, I was 45 minutes ahead the cut off :)

The challenge comes up in KM 18… I felt a bit hard to breathe, and my heart not feeling comfortable as well. I open up the 2 clips of my hydration bag, and started to walk in average speed. I kept looking for the next CP, unfortunately I didn’t see any… still in complete dark in front of me (because CP area has some lights)

Until KM 22-23, the road is downhill, then I run a little bit, walk-run-walk-run… Finally saw CP3, which is in KM 25, the U-turn point.

I rest in the CP3 for around 30 minutes. I ate 2 bananas, a few pieces of watermelons and refill some water. After rest, I felt better, then continue to run 4KMs, because I know that from CP3 to CP4 (now going backward) is 10.5KM, so I still have a lot of time. Then I continue to walk-run-walk-run…

In KM 32, I felt hungry already, then I drink 1 sachet of BodyKey meal replacement, it can last me for a while. Is great to have it.

When I reached KM35, the time was 6:23am, 52 minutes ahead the cut off.

Reached CP5, 1 hour ahead the cut off, not bad to me :)

But when I reached here, not much fruits left, so I just fill up some water and make Phytopowder to drink. It contains electrolyte…

Last 9KM

9KM left… Although is not long, but the final 5KM, my leg getter heavy, very hard to run already…4KM…3KM…2KM… Then I met a 100KM runner, he also cramp already, so I walk with him until the last 500 meters, then he started to run! OMG… I tried to run, but my calf & ankle kept sending me a signal, saying that if I continue to run, I will cramp… No choice, I walk until the last 100 meters, then run to the finishing line XD

Quite satisfied with my result :)

As I know I lag of training, but I’m sure I can do it better if have proper training.


I have a thought to sign up 100KM, but luckily I didn’t. Because this time 50KM is my limit already, I was quite tired on this race. So I sign up for 100KM, I think I will DNF.

So if the foundation is not strong enough, better don’t go for something unachievable. Foundation is very important, get more training!

Penang Bridge International Marathon 2016

This is my 3rd year joining full marathon in PBIM. The 1st time I completed in 5:08 hours, that time was running on 2nd bridge. Last year I completed in 6:23 hours, due to injured on my ankle, and lack of training. This year, my finishing time almost same as last year.

Running gears - Socks

Injinji socks. Because the 1st time I join FM, my toes feeling pain after some distance. This sock separate toes so that it avoid the problem.

A newly bought compression pant. I bought itduring the BodyKey event day. Quite good!

It’s always good to spare some cash & phone. Because to me, I can’t feel safe if without cash 😆

Running gears - GPS watch

10 years ago, people run with a normal digital watch with a basic timer. Nowadays I see many of athlete wearing a GPS watch.

I also using this to estimate my pace in order to complete before the cutoff time (COT).


Well, I can complete within the COT without much training, I think mostly is because of Nutrilite!

My friend told me that his knee feeling a bit pain before the race start. But he is showing the OK sign (see his right-hand), that means no problem 🤔


So many people joining FM, can see that FM is not as hard as you think 😉

Pre-race almost start

My stomach was not feeling well after around 8km, this was the same mistake I made last year —— eating too much before the race…

Same like last year, I started to walk after 8th km. Walk-run-walk-run~ feel like want to vommit also, very uncomfortable.

Going up the bridge

Until going up the bridge, it was 18-19th km, my stomoch feeling better at that time. But feeling sleepy and leg muscle start feeling pain. I think this is because of not training well.

Yeah!!! I also prepared Phytopowder orange 2 sticks. Around 26 or 27km I drink while running/walking, that moment my leg muscle was tight. Until 30 or 31km, my leg feeling relief. Phytopowder is so powerful!!! I think is because of electrolytes, it’s very helpful.

In the last 3km, I saw the 6:30 balloon coming from my back. Omg, my target was to faster than last year, so I keep pushing myself without stop running (the pace is around 8min/km+-). I really wish the balloon man can stop running for a while, because my leg very tired already. That moment has an evil-me & angel-me fighting in my mind. No choice, still have to push, I told myself: persist 1 more km, I can do it

This year we have different size of medals —— S, M, L. Obviously, S is for 10km finisher, M is for 21km finisher, L is for 42km finisher.

Remember the red-tshirt guy? He told me his knee pain. Guess what? He completed in 5:40++ hours. And this is also his first FM.

The pink t-shirt guy is running HM, hopefully next year can see him in FM.

In that day, I have total 64k+ steps, almost same as last year.


Back in year 2014, I was so excited when I completed my first FM. Now, this is my 3rd times, before the race I already know I sure can complete within the COT, so the excitement level is not that high.

I believe everyone has a target to pursue. Just like 3 years back, my target was 42km; now, I’m looking towards ultra race in 2017!

You can have a meaningful life if you have a dream to pursue 😎

After I register for this race (alone), I was actually looking for some friends go with me. After asking a few friends, only she agree to join me.

But before that, she was afraid that she can’t make it. Because of is at night, some more in trail. I keep encouraging her, at the end, she signed up for the race!!

Finishing Medal

Completed in about 2 hours. This is not a very good result to me. As I very seldom training these days (can check it here).

There are quite many up& down hills, and running in the dark is much more difficult as compare to morning. Need to be very alert, otherwise may lost in the forest, because the road inside, some time suddenly need to turn to small road which is quite hard to notice as the surrounding is so dark.


What’s make to be able to complete in a not too bad timing? Of course I must give the credit to Nutrilite. The cutoff time is 3 hours, and I used 2/3 of the cutoff time to complete. To me, I think consider ok already.

She also finish in about my time, and I’m a bit surprise. Because before that, she told me is hard, nervous, not sure can complete within the cutoff time or not, and so on…

Now I learned, if someone tell you that s/he cannot, is not s/he actually cannot, just s/he underestimate him/herself. If you’re the one think that you cannot, believe in yourself, because… YOU CAN DO IT!!!

King of Sungai Lembing 2016 - 50KM

What makes me join this run?

At the beginning of 2016, I wrote down some resolution for this year. One of them is to complete an ultra-marathon. Any marathons that more than 42km are consider ultra.

The moment I really get the mood in was, after I completed my first Triathlon, then I immediately survey for any ultra run which around 50km to 60km.

My first choice was, Cameron trail run 60km, unfortunately by the time I want to register already full. Then finally I chosen KOSL.

Preparing items for the race. Before this race, I not training actively, like 1 or 2 weeks run 10km only. So I’m quite nervous for this, at the same time also excited!! As I’m going to complete 1 of my 2016 resolution.

  • Blinker (is not really necessary here, because the race started at 7am)
  • Some chocolate (in case hungry)

This is the first water station which has food, coke, 100-plus, but no cup is provided… I just bring a bottle with plain water, so if next time any of you want to join the race, please bring 1 more cup

What I learnt from this race

A few items are needed for this race

  • Cap (because the weather will be hot, so a cap can cover eyes & face)
  • Extra 1 or 2 pairs of socks (I cross the river and my socks wet, I have to use it until the end of the race, what if it is 100km?)

Practice fast walk. This is learn from an experienced runner Rambo. This is because most of us (may be not you) cannot run non-stop until the finishing line, so walking is 1 of the key skill to survive until the finishing line. So, walk more…

Find a buddy if you’re not a podium runner. This is a mental game, some time walk with someone is better than alone, at least he/she can encourage & motivate you. Also can get to know a new friend.


Even I’m less training, but I do keep my diets, at the end still manage to complete within the cut off time.

Penang Triathlon 2016

This is my 3rd time sign up triathlon race.

The first time was on 2015, Penang Triathlon 2015. That time I borrow a very old mountain bike (break system also not that good) from my uncle, borrow helmet from a friend. Is like, not well prepared and just go for it. Unfortunately, on the event day, after check in my bike, I fell down and get my ankle injured. At first, I insist go to the swimming side, and try to swim a while, but was too pain, so I give up the race. My first time to give up a race…

After rest for 6 months, I sign up Port Dickson Triathlon 2015. Thought this time I will complete, but too bad, that time was hazy, and I withdraw again.

On the same year I bought a road bike, and some necessary equipments, then sign up Penang Triathlon 2016. Then…

Get ready

This time I came alone, stay on 1 of my relative house, in Sungai Ara. The event place is on another side of the island. So need to wake up early and go to the place.

First, of course check in the bike at the starting point.

Then there is a shuttle bus to send all participants to the swimming area, I think around 2-3km.

First time swimming in the sea, the key is to cool down, don’t get panic. Because when I started to run into the sea, I felt my Qi is not enough and used up easily. After a while, I keep calm and slow down, is getting better. Swimming part is 2 loops triangle, each ~750m far.

After swim, by right should be cycling section. But this is different, we have to run from the sea side to starting point, around 2-3km.

Then the hardest part is cycling (to me). May be is because of I not get used to cycling, some more the route has lots of uphill & downhill, but is a very awesome experience. I almost cramp at first 5km of cycling, then I get down and rest for a while, and continue… Total distance 40km, go 20km, then U-turn 20km. The challenging part is after U-turn, a long journey of uphill, but I don’t have cramp feeling anymore.

The final part is to run 10km. Although 10km is not long, but I walked a lot, instead of run. Met a new friend there and he walk/run together with me, so we finish almost the same time.

During my run, was heavy rain, that’s why whole body get wet.

First triathlon completed in almost 5 hours. To me, I’m satisfied with the timing, because I’ve no proper training for this, and still completed within the cut off time (5:30 hours). And compare with last year.
